Teachers spoke. We listened.
Kupu Words 1, for Year 0–2 learners has become a classroom favourite, laying a strong literacy foundation. But there was one challenge: for the smallest tamariki, the book itself was just a little too big.
Now in 2 sizes.
We’re proud to introduce Kupu Words Junior, the newest and littlest member of the Kupu Words family.
- Size matters. At 255 x 205mm, Kupu Words Junior is the same size as a standard 1B5 exercise book, perfect for small hands.
- Options for every class. The original Kupu Words 1 remains available in A4+ size (230 x 315mm). Teachers can now choose a mix depending on preference and student needs.
Built for learning, designed for growth.
Like its larger sibling, Kupu Words Junior is grounded in structured literacy principles, systematic, explicit instruction in reading and writing. Containing identical learning tools to the larger Kupu Words 1:
- 14mm line spacing with dotted guides, gives early writers the space and structure to form letters confidently.
- Margin dots support alignment and legibility.
- Page layout: two-thirds lined for writing, one-third blank for drawing. This blend encourages creativity alongside literacy.
- Front cover charts for blends and digraphs, complete with practical examples, reinforce phonics learning daily.
- Laminated back cover provides a colourful, interactive space for sight word practice, making repetition engaging.
- Alphabet chart (upper- and lower-case) with example words, te reo Māori translations, and images. This enriches vocabulary while celebrating cultural inclusivity.
- Goal-setting section at the back encourages tamariki to reflect, take ownership, and track progress on their learning journey.
Kupu Words Junior isn’t just smaller. It’s smarter.
It gives teachers flexibility, supports structured literacy, and invites tamariki to write, draw, imagine, and own their learning journey from the very first page.
Kupu Words Junior is available for pre-order, stock due at the end of October 2025.
